Olympic diver Tom Daley posed for a photo at some famous Russian landmarks over the weekend – in spite of being an openly gay celebrity in an extremely homophobic country.
The diver posed at The Kremlin in Moscow, one of Russia’s most iconic landmarks, with fellow divers Chris Mears and Jack Laugher before posting it on Instagram.
While it’s not clear if he was making a political statement – fans are applauding him for making himself visible in Russia, which introduced a controversial federal law which criminalises the distribution of LGBT “propaganda”.
The diver also took a selfie outside St Basil’s Cathedral.

Back in October of last year, Daley said that he had “no concerns” about competing in Russia. “I’ve been there five or six times before and never had any problems,” he said. “To go there to dive and you don’t go there thinking to do anything other than that. You go there focusing on each dive you do and each competition that you’ve got.
“For me I wouldn’t be going there thinking ‘I’ve got to do this [protest]’ – I just go there and focus on my performance.”
