On Monday, February 25 Cork college’s LGBT society announced details of their campaign, which seeks to draw attention to Ireland’s current homelessness crisis, on Instagram.

“UCC LGBT Society is delighted to launch our Roofs Over Rainbows campaign drawing light to the issue of LGBT homelessness in Ireland.

UCC LGBT Society is delighted to launch our Roofs Over Rainbows campaign drawing light to the issue of LGBT homelessness in Ireland. Ireland is currently experiencing homelessness crisis which is going largely unacknowledged by the government. Young people, families and people across the country are living on the streets, sleeping on couches and have no where to go due to rising rent prices and a lack of social housing. The crisis affects the most vulnerable in society. LGBT* people are a major demographic who struggle with homelessness due to family rejection and financial instability. In the UK, 20% of homeless people are LGBT* and, in the US, a staggering 40% are LGBT*. Ireland has no LGBT* specific shelters which is a massive problem due to added risk of discrimination and violence that LGBT* people face whilst experiencing homelessness. In 2012, the Irish government agreed to compile a report on LGBT* homelessness within 2 years. It is now 6 years later and we still have no progress. We’re calling out the Irish government to deliver on this report and to provide the supports needed to help our community. There is multiple parts to this campaign to try to get our voices heard.
