Katie Couric responds to the internet backlash she received for asking transgender models questions that many deemed as offensive and ignorant.

Last week, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Carmen Carerra and Orange is the New Black‘s Laverne Cox stopped by Katie Couric’s talk show to chat about upcoming projects and trans issues – only for the conversation to take an unfortunate turn when Couric asked an invasive question about their “private parts”.

Couric explained, “Some felt my question was off base, but I wanted to make sure that my question and Carmen’s answer stayed in the show as a teachable moment – for me, as well as my viewers.

“I am really proud that we were able to spotlight such an open and honest conversation with Carmen and Laverne Cox – who are both terrific – about the myriad of struggles that this often maligned, marginalised and misunderstood community faces.”
