Russell T Davies new series of shows, Cucumber, Banana and Tofu are set to air in 2015 – here is a teaser trailer that gives nothing away.

The risque new trailer shows levels of penis hardness through visual food analogies for Davies’ new gay-themed shows set to air on Channel 4, E4 and 4od.

Explaining the concept, former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said: “I once read about a scientific institute which had studied the male erection. […] It divided the hard-on into four categories, from soft to hard. One, tofu. Two, peeled banana. Three, banana. And four, cucumber. Right there and then I knew I had my drama.”

This series of shows will follow on from Russell T Davies’ popular 1999 gay drama Queer as Folk and his five-year stint on BBC show Doctor Who. The two shows, Cucumber and Banana will interlink through characters and storylines.

The Thick of It’s Vincent Franklin will star in Cucumber as a gay man in his 40s who becomes bored of his long-term relationship with partner Lance and becomes attracted to a younger man. The cast also includes Rufus Hound and Coronation Street alum Julie Hesmondhalgh.

Companion series Banana, which will air on E4, is co-written by The Great British Bake-Off‘s Sue Perkins and is aimed at a younger demographic. It will feature the popular Luke Newberry of zombie drama In the Flesh.

“The joy of Banana is in the beautiful, charming, witty and sometimes heartbreaking stories of a wide variety of characters, be they gay, lesbian, transgender or anything in-between,” explains Davies. “The fact we have a bunch of brilliant and wildly talented young people in it, and making it, will give it even more bite and an exciting edge.”

YouTube star Benjamin Cook will front online spinoff, Tofu, exploring real gay sex stories with contributions from the public.
