This summer, award-winning LGBTQ+ musical Fun Home is premiering in Dublin in the Gate Theatre. It runs from July 6 to August 26, and the good news doesn’t end there as GCN has a pair of tickets to giveaway to one lucky reader!

The play directed by Róisín McBrinn was adapted from the acclaimed graphic novel by queer icon Alison Bechdel. It follows Alison, a successful graphic novelist who is confronting her family’s past.

With its captivating music composed by Jeanine Tesori and heartfelt lyrics penned by Lisa Kron, Fun Home has been awarded five Tony Awards, including for Best Musical and Best Original Score, making it a must-see for LGBTQ+ audiences.

Throughout the play, the audience gets to meet the protagonist’s loving but dysfunctional family as Alison is forced to confront long-hidden family secrets after the sudden death of her father.

The synopsis of the play reads: “Fun Home features Alison both past and present: her memories as a child playing in the family’s funeral home merge with her time as a college student coming out and finding first love, and her adult life as a successful graphic novelist.”

This allows the story to thematise topics like coming of age, coming out, finding your first love and trying to make your own way in the world. As well as these issues, it’s important to note that Fun Home also contains references to suicide and mental health issues.

Tickets are on sale now on the Gate Theatre website from €15, but if you’re feeling lucky, GCN has one pair of tickets to give away for the opening night on July 6. For a chance to win and see this extraordinary musical, simply answer the following question:

Who composed the music for the Fun Home?

The competition closes at midnight on July 3. Winners will be announced on social media and contacted via email.
