Social media giant Twitter has announced it will now ban accounts using  homophobic or transphobic language.

The newly introduced Twitter Rules bans ‘Hateful Conduct’. “You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease,” reads the Rules section on the company’s website. “We also do not allow accounts whose primary purpose is inciting harm towards others on the basis of these categories.”

Users who do not abide by the rules can expect to have their accounts temporarily locked or permanently suspended.

A 2012 Twitter campaign titled ‘To My Unborn Child’ was inundated with a barrage of anti-gay tweets

Twitter’s director of trust and safety, Megan Cristina, announced the updated rules in a blog post last week. “The updated language emphasises that Twitter will not tolerate behavior intended to harass, intimidate, or use fear to silence another user’s voice,” wrote Cristina.

As always, we embrace and encourage diverse opinions and beliefs — but we will continue to take action on accounts that cross the line into abuse.”

However, The Advocate reports that the banning may not apply to the word ‘Faggot’, which NoHomophobes.com reports has been used on the platform a staggering 34 million times since 2012.
