Trans Day of Visibility celebrated with a wide range of digital events by Irish LGBT+ groups

Due to social distancing, the trans community and their allies are celebrating Trans Day of Visibility through digital platforms in creative ways.

Trans Day of Visibility is being celebrated in a variety of creative and collaborative ways across digital platforms during this time of social distancing.

March 31st is the annual Transgender Day of Visibility, which celebrates the astounding contributions transgender people have made to both society and the LGBT+ community. The day also raises vital awareness of the discrimination still experienced by many through restrictive healthcare systems and transphobic actions. 

Due to COVID-19, a nationwide lockdown and practice of social distancing means that physical gatherings are prohibited, however numerous trans organisations have launched fantastic celebrations for Trans Day of Visibility across digital platforms. 

Here are some of the events you should check out:

TENI – Visibility Video

The trans community and their allies have come together as part of a phenomenal TENI video project series. This collaborative effort showcases various trans voices to speak on their experiences and why this day is so crucial. During the video, the founder of transgender healthcare campaign, This Is Me, Noah Halpin, said, “Visibility brings with it empowerment.”

On Twitter, TENI shared the following message, “TENI really want to make Tuesday as positive, fun and empowering as we can (we could all use a bit of positivity right now!)”

If anyone would like to get involved, TENI shared, “If you’d like to join in being visible today (as a trans person or an ally), share a video on social media and tag TENI, using the hashtag #TENITDOV2020.”

TENI have also shared a video of some helpful questions to answer during your clip. 

Big Trans Day of Visibility Variety Show

Comedy collective Hysteria Ireland will be streaming an exciting showcase of various talents at 9pm tonight over on Facebook. From poetry to magic tricks, the Big Trans Day of Visibility Variety Show is set to be a rousing success.

Hysteria shared on their Facebook page, “We’ll be doing a big variety show tomorrow for #TransDayofVisibility! Tune in here at 9pm GMT for incredible trans and GNC artists performing comedy, poetry, drag, magic and more! Gonna be a blast!!”

BeLonG To – Being Trans Video

BeLonG To have created a heartwarming video where young trans people and their parents come in to speak about what being trans means to them. Accompanying the video, there is adorable art work in the Trans Pride colours created by Transgender Victoria.

A Talk and Chat with Karen McShane

Join the LGBT+ Heritage Northern Ireland for this great event celebrating Trans Day of Visibility. At 7pm, tune in for a conversation with trans woman Karen McShane, who starred in 2019 Channel 4 documentary The Making of Me.

Gender GP Podcast

Dr Bellinga, an expert in facial feminisation sugery (FFS) and part of the Facial team in Malaga, will be joining Gender GP for an informative podcast recording. And they are looking for some questions and topics to focus on throughout the episode. Gender GP wrote on Twitter, “We’d love to include some questions from the trans community- Please DM us any questions you have for him and we’ll ask as many as we can.”

Movie Night/ Book Club

Why not plan a movie night or book club which feature trans stories and experiences. There are some great documentaries and films to check out on Netflix.

Ahead of this year’s Trans Day of Visibility, gender-neutral clothing line TomboyX launched a Trans Pride collection. It was modelled by Miles Jai, Trice McKinnon, and Theo Germaine. Co-founder of the brand, Fran Dunaway, said, “No longer is the world black and white, or male or female. It’s time to do away with this logic, do away with the binary, and instead embrace what it means to be human. We hope we can help you do that in comfort and style on International Transgender Day of Visibility, and beyond.”
