The iconic film Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is getting a sequel and fans are going wild with excitement. The two main actors, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, are currently in final talks to reprise their starring roles, according to reports. The pair will also be the executive producers of the new film.

The 1997 classic sees Sorvino and Kudrow play a pair of 28-year-old best friends who moved from Tucson, Arizona, to LA in hopes of creating impressive new lives after enduring torture from the popular crowd at school. When they fail to reach their goals, including “bagging (rich) boyfriends, losing weight and getting better jobs”, the sassy duo are forced to invent stories of fake careers to impress their formerly dismissive classmates at their impending high school reunion.

Fans have been calling for a sequel to the iconic film for years, as Mira Sorvino herself said in a 2014 interview, revealing that she would love to return to the role. News of the sequel had been teased in November 2024, when Sorvino revealed to People that a deal had been made and that both she and Kudrow were on board.

The actor added that screenwriter Robin Schiff would return to the project as well, saying that she had already “written multiple drafts of an amazing funny script, which checks all the boxes for all the fans”.

Tim Federle, who created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, will join their team as director, with production eyeing a June start date, possibly in Los Angeles.

Taking to social media to celebrate the news, one fan wrote: “’Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion’ sequel?!? Yes, please! I loved this movie back in the day!”

“I need that ‘Romy and Michele’ sequel.. one of my fave movies of all time,” another user commented.

“That’s awesome news! I can’t wait to see what they bring to the table this time. Romy and Michele are iconic!” someone else wrote.
