Eilish O’Carroll, who plays Winnie McGoogan on the popular show, came out as gay in her 40s after two divorces from men and hopes that the people of Ireland will vote yes in the upcoming referendum.

“Marriage is not an institution I particularly feel strongly about, but I do feel very strongly about choice and I do feel very strongly about children’s rights. […] At the minute children are not being treated equally in same-sex marriages and that to me is immoral never mind anything else.”

The 62 year-old sister of Brendan O’Carroll told The Mirror that, regardless of the issues, she will fight for children’s causes:

“We have a constitution that says all children will be treated equally providing they don’t live with a gay couple. If there was something other than marriage that gave them those rights then I would be fighting for that too. But marriage is the only institution that gives parents and children that legal foundation and so they should have it.”

O’Carroll will perform a small show in a number of venues, entitled Live Love Laugh, which she hopes will open up the minds of the audience and encourage them to vote yes for marriage equality.

“If it encourages people to think about voting yes for the referendum I would be delighted.”

Eilish is bringing Live Love Laugh to a number of venues including the Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, on 13 March before Mrs Brown’s Boys begins its 2015 tour.
