Disability Pride Month takes place every July but unfortunately doesn’t always get the attention and appreciation it deserves. The occasion has been celebrated since 1990, with the first celebration taking place in Boston, marking the month when the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. It has since spread across the world, including to Ireland.
Due to a lack of attention and support, Disability Power Ireland is unfortunately unable to organise a parade this year, but plans to next summer, July 2027. Although there is no parade, here are some other great events happening for Disability Pride this July.
Ablefest
Able Events’ biggest event of the year, Ablefest, will be held at the end of July. Born from two Irish dads, Kevin and Shay, who were tired of their kids being excluded from fun because of their disabilities, Ablefest is Ireland’s only music and arts festival specifically designed for all persons to be able to attend.
Since 2018, 15,000 people have gathered in Co. Meath for music, arts, animals, food and drink. This year’s lineup features Mundy, DJ Mark McCabe, Jake Carter, Bingo Loco and more.
Ablefest is being held on July 25 at Fairyhouse Racecourse; tickets are available now. In addition, Able Events hosts other events throughout the year to celebrate persons with disabilities such as Able Soccerfest and Able Globe Awards.

Expanding Horizons
That same weekend, Expanding Horizons is hosting their Disability Pride Month event on July 24, in the Great National Hotel, Ballina. This organisation is proudly led by a disabled team with the goal of bringing together disabled and allied voices to better the community.
Their July event will feature three guest speakers: Amanda McGuinness, Fionn Crombie Angus and Pat Carty.

While there may not be a parade in Dublin this Disability Pride Month, there’s always a way to celebrate and be proud.
