Olympian Gus Kenworthy has announced that he and his boyfriend Andrew Rigby are engaged after a surprise proposal. The athlete whisked his partner off to the dreamy coastal scenery of Mallorca, where he got down on one knee to pop the question.

A freestyle skier, Gus Kenworthy won the silver medal in men’s slopestyle at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He also took part in the Winter Olympics in Milan this year, where he was one of the most prominent LGBTQ+ athletes. Beyond his sports career, he is also an actor, having starred in shows such as The Challenge, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, American Horror Story, and Will & Grace.

Kenworthy first met Australian financial executive Andrew Rigby almost a decade ago in Sydney in a brief encounter. However, the pair reunited at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2024. The two began dating then, starting with a long-distance relationship between LA and Sydney, before moving together to New York last year.

In an exclusive interview with People, the couple shared more details about their engagement. Kenworthy explained how he spent weeks carefully planning the surprise proposal, which took place in Illa de sa Torre, an islet that is part of an archipelago off the southwest coast of the Spanish Balearic Island of Mallorca.

“We took a private dinghy from the pier at the St. Regis where we were having a cocktail by the beach at the Mar Sea Club,” Kenworthy told People, sharing details about how they got engaged. “I told Andrew I was taking him on a little adventure. Once we got to the island we climbed off the dinghy and hiked up to the top of the cliffs.

“I organized for a picnic blanket to be waiting for us with a pitcher of margaritas — extra sweet because that’s how Andrew orders them. After the proposal, we got back on the dinghy — but instead of going back to the mainland, it took us out to a chartered boat.”

To celebrate the engagement, Kenworthy also invited some of the couple’s closest friends, who appeared for a toast after the proposal. As Rigby shared, it all came as a surprise, as he assumed their trip was simply a relaxing minivacation after a busy travelling schedule.

“We’ve talked about this a lot obviously, but I thought this was just a relaxing vacation. To say I was shocked was an understatement. And then to see our friends there immediately after Gus proposed? Wow,” he shared.
