Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and Will Poulter (The Maze Runner) are set to star in a queer body-horror set in Yorkshire in 1348, the same time the Black Death arrived in the UK. Connor and Poulter are reuniting after appearing together in Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s Warfare.

The movie, titled Rapture, is said to follow a group of monks who have to defend their monastery from plague victims who have come back to life as undead beings. The monks are divided and conflicted: some feel compelled to care for the sick, while others prioritise protecting the monastery’s ancient knowledge. 

Rapture was written and will be directed by award-winning Canadian playwright, author and director Jordan Tannahill, marking his feature film directorial debut. Tannahill’s novel The Listeners was adapted into a BBC limited series, which aired in late 2024 and received favourable reviews. 

Speaking about Rapture, Tannahill said the movie will centre on “the deep, passionate relationship between these two young monks who have grown up together”, describing the project simply as “queer body horror”.

Manu Ríos (Elite) is also set to star alongside Kit Connor and Will Poulter, although details about his role have yet to be revealed.

The name also has Biblical associations. In 1 Thessalonians 4:17, living believers are described as being “caught up” together with those who have died in Christ to meet the Lord. Given Rapture’s story of the living confronting the undead, the title could carry a double meaning, although Tannahill has not publicly confirmed this interpretation.

There is currently no official release date for the movie. According to a recent listing reported by Production Weekly, Rapture is now due to begin filming in October 2026, after production was originally expected to get underway in 2025. With filming seemingly yet to begin, a 2027 release now appears more likely.

Hungary has been confirmed as one of its filming locations. The film is produced by Elevation Pictures, 2AM and Brookstreet Pictures, with HanWay Films handling international sales. 

With Heartstopper now behind him, Connor may be looking to move into darker, grittier roles that show a different side of his range. This may be the start of a long-running series of darker, more serious undertakings for the actor.

Based on what Tannahill has actually said and the official synopsis, Rapture seems to be giving us religious devotion, suppressed and complicated desire, disease, zombies and queerness.
