IFI Horrorthon returns for its 28th annual edition, and this year, the festival partners with EGG Cabaret for a Prom Night spectacular. Screenings of three prom-centred horrors, Carrie (1976), The Loved Ones and the iconic Jennifer’s Body, will take place across the IFI’s screens before the night culminates in live entertainment and a party from EGG Cabaret.
The EGG Cabaret performance will be followed by a DJ set, with audiences encouraged to dress up for the occasion. Entry to the Prom Night screenings will also include admission to the after-party.
“Come in all your finery to have your picture taken on this special occasion, cast your vote for the Prom King and Queen, have flashbacks to your own Debs that add an extra layer of horror to the evening, and enjoy one of our three screenings before being entertained by EGG Cabaret and DJs,” said IFI programmer Kevin Coyne of the Prom Night spectacular.

Beloved queer-coded classic Jennifer’s Body will be a standout must-see screening for many festival-goers. Directed by Karyn Kusama and starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, the 2009 film underperformed at the box office following a widely misleading marketing campaign, but has since received critical reappraisal and become a feminist cult classic.
With its homoerotic subtext, Jennifer’s Body was quickly accepted by LGBTQ+ audiences. The film is widely considered an important piece of bisexual and queer representation, with the titular Jennifer declaring that she “goes both ways” and the two characters sharing a prolonged make-out scene. Screenwriter Diablo Cody later described the relationship between Jennifer and Needy as “obviously” queer, saying she wished it could have been explored further.
The festival promises to offer plenty more chills across its five-day run, with this year’s focus on folk horror. Showings include classics such as The Blood on Satan’s Claw, Witchfinder General, Incubus and The Wicker Man, followed by some contemporary films within the genre.
Also returning are the annual Horror Table Quiz, the Secret Classic screening and the Surprise Film screening.
IFI Horrorthon will run for five days of frights from October 22 to 26. Don’t miss it!
