The official trailer has just dropped for The Body, a new series following Catholic schoolgirls who cause unholy chaos after a failed dance-team initiation. Across eight episodes, viewers will be transported into the world of the Lions, who are known for praying hard and sinning harder.

The girls live fairly normal Catholic lives consisting of attending Mass, practising dance routines, and… potentially summoning the devil into their small town. The latter occurs when the troupe, led by team captains Anya (Kristina Bogic) and Elise (Sara Boustany), perform a drug-fueled ritual on their new recruit Grace (Sofia Wylie).

As Elise declares, “Prince of Darkness, take this most holy virgin sacrifice, and in exchange let us place at regionals,” something highly suspicious happens to Grace, sparking ripple effects felt throughout the school and leaving the Lions with a major secret to bury.

The Body is created by queer writer and director Quinn Shephard, alongside lesbian winner of The Traitors Gabby Windey. Shepherd says it’s a “playful spin” on her own experiences as a teenager, describing the series as “gritty camp… a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror”.

The creator drew inspiration from some of her favourite ‘90s and 2000s teen movies and erotic thrillers when making the show, including Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures and Mean Girls. She also noted the “massive hyperfixation” she had with the 1953 play The Cubicle.

It is said to be Shephard’s “most personal” story yet, which she “literally made” for her teen self. “I joke that this show is so me — it’s really aggressively me… It’s satirizing some of the trauma of growing up queer and repressed and the confusion around that.”

The Body premieres exclusively on Netflix on November 11. For a taste of what’s to come, check out the trailer below.
