It may only have been a season ago since Modern Family’s Cameron and Mitchell finally tied the knot, but now the cast have hinted at a “gay divorce”.

The cast of the hit comedy took part in a panel discussion at Paleyfest in Los Angeles this weekend. When the subject turned to Mitchell and Cameron, writers spoke of how their on-screen nuptials were a victory for show. “We started breaking the story for the wedding because we thought things would go a certain way in terms of the law for gay people to be married.”

Writers waited for same-sex marriage to become legal in California (where the show is set) before having the pair walk down the aisle.

Actor Julie Bowen, who plays Claire Dunphy, joked that a storyline for season 7 would involve a “gay divorce” – while Burrell announced, “I oppose gay divorce!”

While comments should be taken with a pinch of salt, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for TVs (arguably) greatest couple.
