A gay couple was thrown to the floor, beaten and had a wooden chair thrown at them in an alleged gay bashing in a Manhattan restaurant on Tuesday night.
Jonathan Snipes and Ethan York-Adams were out celebrating Cinco de Mayo together in Chelsea when the fight erupted.
The graphic brawl was filmed by another patron of Dallas BBQ, Isaam Sharif, who shared the video on Instagram.
“These guys attacked us specifically because they knew we weren’t their type of people,” said Snipes, 32, assumes that it was a gay bashing. “It was disgusting. It was awful,” Snipes told DNAinfo New York.
The altercation apparently began as Snipes received a text message around 11pm about a death in the family. He quickly went to leave but accidentally knocked over a drink on his way out and was the subject of homophobic abuse.
“White f****ts, spilling drinks,” one of the other customers allegedly said.
Snipes said that when he confronted the table about the remarks, the altercation soon became physical. A large bald man is seen punching Snipes and then kicks him at least once as insults continue. The same man then hits the couple with a wooden chair before fleeing the scene.
Snipes had a tooth knocked loose and cartilage snapped in his ear during the beating.
Sharef – who filmed the ordeal – claims he did not hear any anti-gay remarks and did not believe it was a hate crime; a police report also established in their report that it was not a hate crime.
The assailant fled the scene and police are still investigating.
