Dolly Parton speaks out against North Carolina’s ‘bathroom bill’ in no uncertain terms

Dolly, who performed in North Carolina last week, spoke to CNN to confirm her stance in relation to the controversial bathroom bill.

A longtime supporter of LGBT rights, it came as a surprise that Dolly didn’t join other artists who cancelled shows in North Carolina, such as Bruce Springsteen and Maroon 5,  after the state passed the controversial House Bill 2, restricting trans use of bathrooms.

However in her recent comments she has again reaffirmed that she is still working 9 to 5 on the side of LGBT rights: “I think everybody should be treated with respect, I don’t judge people. I try not to get too caught up in the controversy of things.”

The singer went on to outline her own position with regards to bathroom usage: “I hope that everybody gets a chance to be who and what they are. I just know if I have to pee, I’m going to pee, I don’t care where it’s going to be.”

Parton is also known for penning the hit song “Travelin’ Thru” for the 2005 movie Transamerica about a transgender woman meeting up with the son she never knew.

Selena Gomez is the latest artist to speak out for trans rights, while failing to cancel concerts in North Carolina.

“I’ve been reassured the venue I will be performing in has gender neutral bathrooms as I want everyone coming to my show to be welcomed,” she said.
