A big-hearted activist who set up a Go Fund Me account to bring LGBT asylum seekers from across the country together to march in Dublin Pride has raised over €2,000 in just 24 hours.

Theatre director Oonagh Murphy, who works with LGBT asylum seekers, started the fundraising page yesterday in an attempt to bring members of the Rainbow Solitary Group together to march in Dublin’s annual Pride parade on June 25.

“Rainbow Solidarity Group is a support and social group for LGBT asylum seekers / refugees / lovely humans living in Ireland,” reads the message on the Go Fund Me page.

“One of the first things we are doing is walking together in the Dublin Pride parade. We need funds to cover transport costs for individuals to come from different parts of the country and to make a big banner and t-shirts for the group.

“We’ve been flying on a lot of goodwill and just a little more cash would help us make this happen in a fun, celebratory way. So I’m doing a virtual whip-around and asking if you have a spare fiver or tenner, please donate.”

Murphy is an artist working in the field of performance and theatre-making. According to her website, her directing practice is involved with “staging contemporary stories, working with new writers and developing new work in unconventional ways.”

She is also involved with Y-Factor, a youth initiative of the National Women’s Council of Ireland which works with young women from youth groups and community interest groups in Dublin city.

At the time of publication, the campaign has raised €2,180. Donated funds will cover transport costs, banners and outfits for the marchers.

In a post on Facebook, Murphy responded to the outpouring of generosity her campaign has experience. “Okay, I’m a little emotional at the generosity pledged in response to my last post,” she wrote. “I’ve set up a gofundme.com account because its the simplest way to donate.

“This is going to mean so much to the group in this, the month of Pride. Solidarity is fucking right. Thank you xox.”

Well done, Oonagh, and to all who donate to this excellent cause! Those wishing to donate can do so here.
