Ireland’s own Elaine Mai is back with a brand new music video for her single ‘When I Go’.
This is Mai’s first new single since touring with her latest EP ‘The Colour of the Night’ at Irish music festivals including Body & Soul and last month’s Electric Picnic, where she was awarded ‘Song of the Festival’ for her remix of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game by The Irish Times Culture.
The video features breathtaking Irish landscape footage from Mai’s hometown in Mayo, with the final product showcasing an effortless but considered piece of visual art that works perfectly in tandem with Mai’s new single.
“Her latest EP is a cathartic piece of work which centres around the common human experiences of grief and hope. ‘When I Go’ taken from the EP now gets it’s own release and accompanying video,” a press release for the new single and video explained.
Mai revealed the origins of her new track, indicating that “a difficult period” in her life inspired her:
“‘When I Go’ is about recognising when you’re not okay and then trying to take the steps to make things better. I wrote it at a difficult period in my life and working on it was a fantastic outlet during that time,” she said.
That’s how it is when you’re not feeling okay – it feels like your time isn’t your own
“There’s a line in the song ‘I have to lean on someone else when my time isn’t mine’ and I really think that’s how it is when you’re not feeling okay – it feels like your time isn’t your own.”
“The video was shot at a lake about a ten-minute walk from where I grew up in Mayo. It’s an amazing place to get some perspective, reconnect with nature and clear your head. It was the perfect place to shoot the video for this track and the video takes you on that journey from darkness into light.”
The video was shot and directed by Paul Mahon and the song is out now on iTunes, Spotify and Soundcloud.
Recently, Elaine opened up about overcoming her stage fright and has been working with other artists including Daithí, Liza Flume and TemperMental MissElayneous to remix, produce and perform vocals.
