A third instalment of the ‘90s film franchise Father of the Bride is in the works, with the main storyline set to revolve around a gay wedding.

The plot is said to centre on Matty, the son of Nina and George Banks, played by Diane Keaton and Steve Martin respectively, and his decision to marry the son of a US Navy Seal. Banks will be left “thunderstruck and speechless” when he is thrown out of the family home by his wife upon his typically bad reaction to the news.

Charles Shyer, who was behind the first two installments, will write and direct the feature, while Mark Klein and David Hoberman will produce. This will be the first of the franchise to feature an entirely original script – Father of the Bride (1991) was based on the 1950 film of the same name, while the 1995 follow-up was loosely based on 1951’s Father’s Little Dividend.

According to PerezHilton, insiders spoke about the decision to make the film now, “It’s a timely idea. I told Charles I just hope it goes forward before gay stops trending…”

Steve Martin has denied his involvement in the project as yet, taking to Twitter to comment on the news.
