The theme for March for Choice 2019 will be ‘No One Left Behind’. The march is set to take place from 2 pm on International Safe Abortion Day, Saturday, September 28. The march will depart from the Garden of Remembrance as in previous years.
The abortion-rights campaign website states: “This is the first March for Choice since we have been able to access free, safe and legal abortion in Ireland. Unfortunately, we know that many people are being left behind by our current abortion access. When we march this year, we will be marching to ensure that no one gets left behind when it comes to reproductive health care.”
“More than a year after 66.4% of people voted Yes to allow for abortion care in Ireland; abortion remains out of reach for too many people. ARC fights on for truly free, safe, legal and local abortion access for everyone on the island of Ireland.”
Linda Kavanagh said: “We call on the Government to end the mandatory three-day waiting period, to increase provision in every county, to end the unethical practice of refusal of care by healthcare providers, to stop rogue agencies, and to enact safe access zones around medical facilities as matters of urgency.”
ARC aims to highlight the word ‘accessibility’ when it comes to this year’s march and abortion care overall.
The March for Choice 2019 organisers have stated they are trying to make this year’s march as accessible as possible. There will be dedicated accessibility volunteers, including accessibility stewards and sighted guides, available on the day of the march. As with previous marches, there will be a second join-in point to the March on Custom House Quay for those unable to walk the entire march route.
The platform and corridor in Merrion Square will be accessible, with a wheelchair ramp, space and seating available. Guide/service dogs are also welcome on the platform, where there will be sign language interpreters for the speeches.
