Star Trek star Chris Pine has come out against Russia’s controversial anti-gay legislation, calling it “clearly awful, archaic, hostile nonsense.”

Chris Pine told press while promoting his new film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, that the US should have done more to protest Russia’s controversial anti-gay law in the lead up to the Sochi Winter Olympics. He claims that President Obama’s decision to send gay Olympians Brian Boitano, Billie Jean King and Caitlin Cahow as a part of the US delegation to Sochi 2014 was not enough.

“I think we should do more than just send gay Olympians there,” said Pine. ”What’s happening there in terms of gay rights or the lack of it is extraordinary and awful.”

The Russian law on “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations among minors” was signed into law by President Vladimir Putin in 2013, and punishes public expression of support for “nontraditional relationships”.

In Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Pine’s character attempts to stop a Russian terrorist group from attacking the US.
