US punk band Against Me! will release their first album since lead singer Laura Jane Grace revealed her gender identity.

Transgender Dysphoria Blues is the sixth album from the Florida based band, and documents Grace’s first hand experience transitioning from male to female.

Grace announced that she was transgender in 2012, and says that it was meeting a transgender fan that gave her the courage to do so.  From 2012 on she stopped using her birth name, Tom Gabel. She told Rolling Stone that same year, “Growing up, my experience with transsexualism was nothing but shame. It was something very hidden, and dealt with very privately.”

She added, “One of my first vivid memories of associating with a female was seeing Madonna and being like ‘’that’s me!”

Against Me! have been one of the most influential bands in the DIY punk scene since they formed in 1997. Early songs Reinventing Axl Rose, Sink Florida Sink and Baby, I’m an Anarchist remain genre classics.

Transgender Dysphoria Blues will be released on January 21. Listen to Black Me Out, a track from the album, below.
