Another Champion Diver Comes Out

am

Brazilian diver Ian Matos has come out of the closet, citing British diver Tom Daley as his inspiration.

Matos, 24, told Brazilian newspaper Correio, “From a young age, I knew I was gay, but it was here that I got to live my sexuality.”

Matos said that even though friends told him to remain in the closet until the 2016 Summer Olympics were over, he felt that the increasing pressure of having to keep his sexuality a secret, hiding relationships and avoiding gay clubs, was too much.

He reportedly said that it was Tom Daley’s emotional coming out video last month that gave him the courage to be open about his sexuality.

Matos was originally from Pennsylvania, but moved to Rio de Janiero to pursue his diving career. Last year, he became the Brazilian 3-meter champion.
