Groundbreaking cinema doesn’t always come in the shape of a High School romance, but Love, Simon is the first ever major studio release to feature a central teen gay character. And guess what? He doesn’t get punished in the final reel.

Based on Becky Albertalli’s 2015 YA novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, the film follows Simon (Jurassic World‘s Nick Robinson), a teenager who starts an email romance with another closeted classmate (the title is a play on how he ends his correspondences). It’s one of a raft of great new queer flicks coming your way.

Before I really understood what those tingly feelings were, my first crush was, unfortunately, not human. Hazel the rabbit from Watership Down made me dream of having four legs and living in a burrow.

My first celebrity crush was Harry Judd from McFly. Scarlet for me. We were all mad for the GHD back then. But didn’t he grow into a lovely, handsome man.

Lovefoxxx from the band CSS. I was in love from the minute I saw the video for ‘Death From Above’. I went to see them when they supported Gwen Stefani. When they performed me and my friend were boppin’ round, singing every word in a sea full of confused Stefani fans. I think we spent most of the night trying to get backstage to meet her, but it was not meant to be… sigh.

My first crush was on The Man from Atlantis, as played by Patrick Duffy, who went on to be Bobby in Dallas. I don’t think I’d ever seen a grown-up man semi-naked on TV before he came along (and he was semi-naked for most of the hour-long episode every week), and not only did he have a beautiful body, great swimsuit, the hair of a Greek God and eyes to die for, but he was a genuinely nice superhero – everything I’ve ever wanted in a man!
