A new (casual) choir has been set up in Dublin for all the LGBTQ+ folks who enjoy singing but don’t particularly like the formality of a typical choir. If you recognise yourself in this description, then Dublin LGBT+ Casual Choir is definitely for you.

With no audition required to join, the members of the Dublin LGBT+ Casual Choir don’t care about your technique or how high you can hold your notes. All they care about is your love for singing and your willingness to form a community together.

It is certainly an innovative idea, so we asked them a couple of questions so you can get to know them better. Read on to find out more!

Why was the Dublin LGBT+ Casual Choir set up?

We wanted to create a space where members of the LGBT+ community and allies who enjoy singing, but didn’t want the formality of a choir/chorus that requires an audition to join nor a required time commitment, could come together to form a casual group to learn songs in an easy, relaxed way. It’s almost like a social singing club of sorts, and we’re already seeing the friendships among members sprouting up. There are some amazing LGBT+ sports clubs out there that have thriving member communities and often get praised for the wonderful social element that comes along with them – with us, we’re the same, just in a rehearsal space rather than on a pitch (though we will of course try and stay in pitch ?).

Who can join?

All members of the LGBT+ community and allies are welcome. There are no auditions to join, and members can drop-in and drop-out as they please from session to session (at least one song will be learned each session). We’ll also run social events and have potential (completely optional) gigs.

Do you need to be a good singer?

Not at all, and you don’t need to sing if you don’t wish to – you can hum, clap, or even just snap along. Singers can choose their vocal range (low, middle, high) part from song to song, and change anytime or sing any part they wish. There will be no sheet music to read or line tapes to learn, as lyrics will be denoted by parts.

What kind of music will you be singing?

Our first song is George Michael‘s “Freedom! ’90”, and we’ve already got Whitney on deck as our second song – if that gives some indication! We’d like to feature songs by all genders, duets, groups, and all other types of artists – overall, fun songs that will be popular among LGBT+ and ally audiences. We’re also taking suggestions from members and will have the group vote on which songs they’d like to do.

How can people get involved?

The best way is to follow our Instagram page and send us a DM to express interest in becoming a member. Don’t have Instagram? Send an email to: [email protected]. We’re not going to charge an annual joining/member fee like some clubs. Instead, each session we do to learn songs will have a standard cost to participate which will cover the venue hire and any required insurance fees – no profit will be made, and any extra funds not used for the choir will be donated to LGBT+ charities in Ireland that members can nominate.

Now you have all the details and no more excuses. If music is your passion, this amazing group is just one DM away.

GCN has been a vital, free-of-charge information service for Ireland’s LGBTQ+ community since 1988.

During this global COVID pandemic, we like many other organisations have been impacted greatly in the way we can do business and produce. This means a temporary pause to our print publication and live events and so now more than ever we need your help to continue providing this community resource digitally.

GCN is a registered charity with a not-for-profit business model and we need your support. If you value having an independent LGBTQ+ media in Ireland, you can help from as little as €1.99 per month. Support Ireland’s free, independent LGBTQ+ media.
