See Elle Fanning’s dramatic transformation in the first trailer for the emotional coming-of-age film ‘About Ray’.

Elle Fanning stars as trans teen Ray, who is fighting for gender recognition amidst opposition from family and friends.

Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts stars as Ray’s mother, who has accepted her son’s transition. She tracks down and tries to convince Ray’s estranged biological father (Tate Donovan ) to sign a consent form to grant under-aged Ray as his true gender.

The film, which was originally titled Three Generations also sees Susan Sarandon as his lesbian grandmother, Dolly.  Despite being a part of the LGBT community herself – Dolly has a hard time accepting that her granddaughter is now her grandson.

Despite criticisms that the role of Ray was taken on by a cisgender actress, the feature film is being hailed as an eye-opening look at the trials faced by trans young people and their families.

About Ray will be released in the USA on September 18.
