Openly gay actress, Ellen Page, visited Jamaica’s capital for the first ever Jamaica Gay Pride event.
All this week, celebrations are under way for Jamaica Pride in the country’s capital of Kingston. Jamaica may be a tourist hotspot and a caribbean paradise, but the country is well-known for homophobic and transphobic attacks, making the first ever Pride event in the country even more poignant.
Organiser, Latoya Nugent said before the event that despite fears of attackers, they will celebrate how far the LGBT community as come in the Caribbean country. “We will pause the negative vibrations from anti-gay lobby groups and focus on the strides we have made as a community,” Nugent said. “More importantly, we will recommit to initiatives that see us moving forward as one community.”
Actress Ellen Page took time out of her busy schedule to go on vacation and to witness the festivities first hand.
