As part of his role in the new series The Crowded Room, Tom Holland, playing the character Danny Sullivan, is featured having gay sex in a recent episode. With the raunchy scene now viral, fans have come to defend the Spider-Man actor from homophobic backlash.

The Crowded Room is Holland’s newest show on Apple TV. Based on the non-fiction novel The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes, it follows Danny after he was arrested for involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979. While being investigated by Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried), Sullivan learns about his dissociative identity disorder, and one of the character’s personalities has a scene in the show where they engage in gay sex with a man from the club.

The sequence is very steamy and unlike anything Tom Holland has done before in his other work. While many viewers praised the actor for the scene, others responded with homophobic and negative comments, even creating a hashtag titled #notmyspiderman.

However, fans were quick to respond and defend Holland from the anti-LGBTQ+ remarks.

Others were quick to note that other Spider-Man actors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, have previously played LGBTQ+ roles. Garfield even pushed for his Spider-Man to be bisexual before Tom Holland was hired.

The conversations over the gay sex scene were preceded by Tom Holland while discussing the series’ low ratings overall. In an interview with Unilad earlier in the year, he showed trust in his work.

“It’s no secret my show has been so horribly reviewed, but I’m here today to promote the show and I’m still here. I’m very resilient. It’s a good quality.”

Holland has also previously shared that his work on the show led to his decision to take a break from acting to focus on his mental health.

The Crowded Room releases new episodes weekly, and only two more episodes are left to air.
