It’s the equal rights movie for which we’ve been waiting with bated breath, and finally, the trailer for the tear-jerking ‘Freeheld’ has officially landed.
Starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page, Freeheld follows the story of a couple fighting for domestic partner benefits during the Noughties. It’s based on the true story of Laurel Hester, played by Moore, and her partner Stacie Andree, played by Page.
In the movie, Laurel finds out she has terminal lung cancer, she planned to arrange to leave her pension benefits to Stacie. Yet there was one significant roadblock in the way – New Jersey county’s governing bodies of Freeholders. The couple took in the courts determinedly, thus helping to pave the way to the present day.
Quite apart from the very obvious draw of Oscar-nominated actors Moore, Page and Michael Shannon (as Laurel’s friend), Freeheld boasts a wealth of talent behind the camera, too. The film is directed by Peter Sollett (of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist fame) and written by Ron Nyswaner (who was nominated for his work on Philadelphia). Already, Moore and Page are being tipped for Oscars glory.
Director Sollett told Buzzfeed earlier this week: “It’s not often in the movies that we get to talk about our heroes. And to me, Laurel Hester is a hero — I knew that as soon as I came to know her story.”
“It was simply the most beautiful script I had ever read.” He continued, “It’s a very rare thing to find a piece of material that so accurately expresses one’s views about the world.”
With the film due for release later on this year, expect a healthy dollop of heartbreak this forthcoming awards season.
