As LGBT Ireland celebrated two years of marriage equality last night at Yestival in Dublin’s Tivoli, the city’s most recognised gay landmark, The George was vandalized with spraypainted .
The vandalizers sprayed swastikas on the walls, along with the words ‘faggots’ and ‘fag bar’.
According to manager of The George, Darragh Flynn, cc TV footage will identify the culprits. The graffiti has been removed and Dublin Town have offered to power-hose the bar’s exterior.
“It’s a clear indication that, despite Ireland having marriage equality, homophobia in our society has not gone away,” says GCN editor, Brian Finnegan. “It is also a clear indication that there is much work to be done around the full acceptance of LGBT identities in this country.”
