Hunter Schafer slams Trump administration following passport gender marker change

"Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I’m never gonna stop being trans. A letter on a passport can’t change that. And f*ck this administration."

Euphoria star and model Hunter Schafer has shared her frustration online after receiving a new passport with her gender marker as ‘M’ under new Trump administration policies. Speaking to fans in a TikTok video, Schafer explained that she had applied for a replacement passport after losing her original while filming overseas. However, upon receiving the new document, she was shocked to see that it had been altered to reflect the incorrect gender.

The unexpected change now means she may have to “out” herself at airport security in order to be allowed through. Reflecting on the situation, Schafer acknowledged her relative privilege “as a celebrity trans woman who is white and thin and can adhere to contemporary beauty standards”.

“It still happened,” she noted.

She described the experience as a “harsh reality check,” noting that all her government-issued IDs had identified her as female since she was a teenager. Despite her disappointment, Schafer remained defiant. “I don’t give a f*ck that they put an M on my passport. It doesn’t change anything about me or my transness. However, it does make life a little harder.”

She also took the opportunity to send a message of solidarity to the trans community: “Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I’m never gonna stop being trans. A letter on a passport can’t change that. And f*ck this administration.”

The incident follows Trump’s recent executive order, signed just hours after his inauguration, which restricts gender markers on government-issued documents. The order, titled ‘Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government’, mandates that passports can only be issued with an ‘M’ or ‘F’ marker that aligns with an individual’s sex assigned at birth. This order also eliminates the option for non-binary individuals to use ‘X’ as a gender marker.

Hunter Schafer’s passport experience has resonated with many, highlighting the real-world consequences of such policies on the trans and non-binary community. However many people are criticising the lack of traction made towards the video suggesting potential ‘shadow-banning’.
