Iceland airline WOW has named its newest aircraft TF-GAY as a declaration of support for LGBT rights.

Skúli Mogensen, founder and CEO of WOW air, said the naming came about after the company announced it would begin flights to San Francisco this summer.

“One of our pilots came to me and suggested this name and I thought it was a cool idea so we went ahead with it,” Mogensen told Gay Iceland. WOW is known for its blatant publicity stunts the vibrant pink and purple branding of its jets, signage and even cabin crew.

“We wholeheartedly support queer people’s fight for rights. Just as we support equal rights for everybody, no matter their gender, religion, ethnicity or culture. By making it possible for everybody to travel with us, we’ll hopefully manage to make the world slightly smaller, and better,”

“Furthermore the name fits perfectly into this concept of ours to create a modern family out of our air planes from the names we give them,” referring to the company’s habit of giving its planes familial names like TF-MOM, TF-DAD, TF-SIS, TF-BRO, TF-SON and TF-KID.

“Since day one, we’ve emphasised joy and friendliness in our services because we want everybody to feel welcome in the WOW family. And we think TF-GAY fits right in with our modern family concept.”
