Indian Lesbian Themed Ad Goes Viral Despite Anti-Gay Law

india

A beautiful ad, made my Indian clothing company ANOUK, has gone viral despite a controversial anti-gay law in the country.

The clip shows two women getting ready for an event, only for it to be revealed that they are deeply in love and that one woman will be meeting her partners parents for the first time.

“We tried to avoid the stereotypes associated with gay people,” said Avishek Ghosh of Hectic Content, the production company that made the 3 minute film.

“There was no one woman looking more masculine or feminine in the film. We tried to give it a candid feel like it is any other couple being apprehensive about meeting the parents.”

It’s easy to see why this touching ad has gone viral, considering the fierce prejudices LGBT people face in India. Last year, a 150 year old law that criminalises homosexuality was upheld by the Supreme Court. The ruling was condemned by human rights groups, with one stating, “The Supreme Court’s ruling is a disappointing setback to human dignity, and the basic rights to privacy and non-discrimination.”
