Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi and Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones star alongside each other in a steamy new LGBTQ+ film, On Swift Horses. Based on Shannon Pufahl’s award-winning novel of the same name, it follows newlywed Muriel (Edgar-Jones) and her charismatic brother-in-law Julius (Elordi) as they embark on parallel journeys of risk, romance and self-discovery.
Set in the 1950s, the former character has just left her Kansas home to start a new life in San Diego alongside her husband Lee (Will Poulter). Their fresh start is somewhat interrupted by the arrival of Julius, who returns from the Korean War without any long-term plans.
A keen card player, Julius ends up in Las Vegas, where he does pit surveillance at a casino. There, he meets Henry (Diego Calva), with whom he sparks a passionate affair.
Throughout the story, he keeps in contact with Muriel, who is more similar to her brother-in-law than either realised. She has also taken an interest in gambling by betting on racehorses and is discovering a same-sex love she never thought possible with her neighbour Sandra (Sasha Calle).
Following On Swift Horse’s World Premiere at the esteemed Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, reviews have already started pouring.
Variety confirmed that the queer drama is “filled with steamy sex”, particularly between Julius and Henry. Similarly, Deadline described the pair’s relationship as a “sizzling hot sexual affair”.
Meanwhile, the BBC was less enthusiastic, saying: “Those scenes are tame next to Fellow Travelers, which was far more explicit and fiery, and more convincing in its depiction of a passionate gay relationship.”
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see for ourselves! However, while On Swift Horses had its World Premiere at the weekend, it is not yet known when it will have a wider cinema or streaming release.
