Janelle Monáe's 'PYNK' Video Rejoices In Pussy Power

The video for Monáe's third single from upcoming album 'Dirty Computer' which is set for release later this month, is a love song to vaginas everywhere.

We are blessed today with a new provocative, not so subtle music video from Janelle Monáe which has to win the award for most references to vaginas in 4 and a half minutes without ever mentioning the word.

The visuals in PYNK depict a utopian universe where an all women cast celebrate their love for the “pink, like the inside of your [wink], baby,” or like “the tongue going down (maybe).”

In one scene, Monáe and her backup dancers wear ruffled voluminous pink trousers which sharply resemble vaginas.

Monáe practically gives birth to actor Tessa Thompson – long-rumoured partner of Monáe – as she bursts out from between Monáe’s legs grinning from ear to ear.

Monáe shared her appreciation for Thompson’s collaboration on this and her other projects saying on Twitter:

“Thank you to the incomparable & brilliant for helping celebrate US (no matter if you have a vagina or not) all around the world! We see you. We celebrate you. I owe you my left arm T. Xx”

The song itself is very pop and the addition of Grimes on the track lends a smoothness to its sound that is comparable to a Janet Jackson track with a lyrical and visual queer twist.

It is unapologetically queer in nature and as the video description puts it: “‘Pynk’ is a brash celebration of creation. self-love. sexuality. and pussy power! PYNK is the colour that unites us all, for pink is the colour found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere…”

The world that Monáe, Grimes and Director Emma Westenberg put together for “PYNK” is like a realisation of the aspirations heard in the lyrics of her previous singles. In “Django Jane,” Monáe rapped about painting the city pink.” In “Make Me Feel,” she talks about the flexibility of her own romantic attractions.

Whatever the intentions behind this stunning audio/visual feast, we are here for it.
