US Vice President Joe Biden has written an op-ed in which he says that the rest of the world should follow in Ireland’s footsteps after marriage equality win.
US Vice President Joe Biden has praised Ireland for voting to legalise equal marriage in a popular vote, before calling on other countries to do the same.
In an op-ed for The Advocate, Biden – one of the most outspoken LGBT allies in the Obama administration – praised Ireland for voting against discrimination based on sexuality.
“They recognized the fundamental truth that every person is entitled to dignity and respect, and that there can be no justification for the denigration or persecution of anyone because of who they love or who they are.”
He continued by praising the United States for legalising marriage in 37 states while also chastising the states in which one can be fired for being LGBT.
“And here in the United States, in just the past three years we’ve gone from six states recognizing marriage equality to 37 states, comprising 224 million Americans.”
Germany, Australia and Northern Ireland are all facing renewed pressure to bring forward same-sex marriage proposals.
In the US, the Supreme Court is expected to rule next month in a case that could bring equality to all 50 states.
Joe Biden believes that around the world, other countries will follow in Ireland’s footsteps to give rights to the LGBT community as “people want to do the right thing.”
Equal marriage in Ireland could be legislated for by the end of July 2015.
