French media have reported that iconic fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, has died at the age of 85 at the American Hospital in Paris this morning.
It is thought that the German designer had been ill for the past month after he did not greet the audience after a Chanel fashion show due to fatigue. It was the first time the designer did not take a bow on the runway in his fashion career.
Lagerfeld had been the creative director of Chanel since 1983. Additionally, Lagerfeld served as the creative director of Fendi, as well as having his own self-named brand.
Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace has led tributes to Lagerfeld after sharing a picture on Instagram. In the post, she speaks on behalf of her late brother, Gianni Versace.
The caption reads:
“Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I. We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you.”
Actor Diane Kruger also paid tribute to Lagerfeld with a photo on Instagram.
Kruger wrote that she had intended to meet with him in Paris this week:
“Karl…I cannot tell you how much you meant to me and how much I will miss you. I will never forget your kindness towards me, your laughs, your imagination. I came to France to see you this week and introduce you to my daughter. I’m heartbroken I was too late. Rest in peace. I adore you.”
The British Vogue Instagram account shared a tribute to Lagerfeld:
“Karl Lagerfeld has passed away at the age of 85 in Paris. A leading creative and household name, Lagerfeld has been paramount to the success of three houses over his lifetime: Chanel, Fendi and his eponymous label. Today, the industry mourns the loss of one of the most influential talents in fashion history.”
On Instagram, Victoria Beckham wrote:
“So incredibly sad to hear this. Karl was a genius and always so kind and generous to me both personally and professionally. RIP.”
No official cause of death has been given, and Chanel has not yet released a statement on Lagerfeld’s death.
