In case you’ve been caught up in the endless Pride shenanigans and missed the news, the GALAS 2023 are back and we need your nominations!

After a three-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic, the award ceremony that recognises the incredible work of the Irish LGBTQ+ community and its allies is back, promising to be bigger and better than ever.

This year’s ceremony takes place on Saturday, October 7, so you’ve still got plenty of time to dust off your ballgowns and polish up your glass slippers.

But don’t get caught sitting on your gorgeous bottoms for too long because we’re here to remind you that your chance to nominate your favourite individuals, companies and organisations is running out fast!

With nominations closing on July 28, we need your help to find the brightest shining stars flying the flag for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility across the country.

As well as categories marking community organisations, volunteers, events and individuals across sports, youth, activism, arts and entertainment, and of course, the revered ‘Person of the Year’, we think it’s just as important to recognise the work of non-LGBTQ+ companies who demonstrate outstanding allyship.

So if you’re lucky enough to love where you work and the support you and your LGBTQ+ colleagues get, or you see how your favourite business has grown to embrace your queer patronage, be sure to nominate them in the ‘Outstanding Company’ and ‘LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group’ categories.

Running since 2009, the GALAS were established to acknowledge and honour the outstanding contribution that individuals, companies and organisations make to support the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland.

As always, GCN and the National LGBT Federation (NXF) are proud to be hosting this incredible celebration, returning to the majestic setting of the Round Room in the Mansion House in Dublin.

Commenting on the return of this event, Chair of the NXF Anna Nolan said: “The GALAS are back for the first time in three years, and we are excited to host an inspiring, uplifting and positive event for the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland.”

“In the context of increasing threats against our community both at home and abroad, it is important to shine a light on and celebrate the positive impact of those who advocate for LGBTQ+ rights,” she continued.

This year there are a total of 12 categories:

  • Community Organisation of the Year – paid staff
  • Community Organisation of the Year – volunteer staff
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Event of the Year
  • LGBTQ+ Young Trailblazer
  • Sports Award
  • Arts & Entertainment
  • Noel Walsh HIV Activism
  • LGBTQ+ Ally
  • Outstanding Company
  • LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group
  • Person of the Year

Support GCN

GCN has been a vital, free-of-charge information service for Ireland’s LGBTQ+ community since 1988.

During this global COVID pandemic, we like many other organisations have been impacted greatly in the way we can do business and produce. This means a temporary pause to our print publication and live events and so now more than ever we need your help to continue providing this community resource digitally.

GCN is a registered charity with a not-for-profit business model and we need your support. If you value having an independent LGBTQ+ media in Ireland, you can help from as little as €1.99 per month. Support Ireland’s free, independent LGBTQ+ media.
