LGBT Asylum Seekers Need Your Help to Perform At EP!

A group of LGBT asylum-seekers who marched in this year’s Dublin Pride parade following a successful funding campaign need your help once more to perform at Electric Picnic.

Following theatre director Oonagh Murphy and I-Dentity group’s successful fundraiser in June, the group was able to afford to travel up to Dublin to march in the annual Pride. The fundraiser, which originally sought travel and housing costs of €1,500 eventually raised €4,150.

Now, Murphy and fellow theatre-makers Maeve Stone and Moira Brady Averill are seeking further assistence to bring the group to Electric Picnic to perform a play about their Pride experience.

From Murphy’s Facebook page: “Ok, I know you all have hearts of gold by now, so here I am asking for more and testing your inherent goodness once again.

You may remember the LGBT asylum seeker group you all helped bring to Pride? Well we’ve been making a show together and it’s getting its first outing at Electric Picnic, thanks to Willie Whiteand Dublin Theatre Festival.

This is VERY exciting, but we need some help. If you have, to loan or to donate, any of the following, hit me up:

  • a sleeping bag
  • a blow-up mattress
  • wellies or walking boots
  • rain gear
  • glitter, preferably rainbow but any kind will do”

The show, titled Just a Shot Away (Just a Kiss Away), will be performed at the Mindfield area’s Theatre Stage at Electric Picnic on Saturday, September 3 at 4.30pm.

‘On 25 June, 2016, a group of friends from around the world walked down O’Connell Street as crowds of strangers cheered,’ reads a press release about the planned performance. ‘Just A Shot Away explores the long journey they took to get there.’

‘Theatre-makers Oonagh Murphy, Maeve Stone and Moira Brady Averill, collaborate with LGBTQI individuals who have sought asylum in Ireland from persecution on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, creating a performance event that presents what it is they have left behind.’

Those seeking more information about how to donate should contact the group here.

“Just A Shot Away (Just A Kiss Away)” and will be on in Theatre Tent at the Mindfield area at 4.30pm on Saturday, September 3
