A woman guest tweeting from the @Ireland Twitter account has been subjected to shocking racist, sexist and homophobic abuse since taking over the feed this week.

Michelle Marie, a gay mother, blogger and black English woman who lives in Ireland and is this week’s guest editor of Irish Central‘s @Ireland twitter account, has suffered “non-stop hate” since she began posting.

“I expected trolls, and backlash, and criticism,” Marie, originally from Oxford, wrote in a longer message posted on the social media site.

“But today I have experienced racism, sexism, fatphobia and homophobia to a degree I have never known. I have had eight hours of non-stop hate thrown at me. I am hurt, shocked and appalled.”

Trolls attacked plus-sized model Marie’s weight, ethnicity, sexual orientation and questioned her suitability as an English person to run the @Ireland account.

Despite the abuse, Marie has continued to tweet about her experiences as an adoptee, about body positivity and about her role as a mother. She also thanked those who supported her against the trolls.

“Thank you to those who have welcomed me and shown me kindness and support. I want to see this week through for you.”

Irish Central, an online publication offering Irish news to Irish-Americans, explains its choice of curator on its website.“As the Ireland of today is not confined to the island of Ireland, the varied voices of @Ireland come from Ireland and across the world.”

“By sharing people’s experiences and lives with the world, project custodians WorldIrish believe @Ireland can help to further connect Ireland to the world and the world to Ireland through the different voices that curate the account each week.”
