The nominations for the 2025 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards have been announced, with LGBTQ+ stars and stories taking centre stage.

Wicked leads the charge with five nominations. Queer actors Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey have both received nods, the former for Female Actor in a Leading Role and the latter for Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Ariana Grande has also been nominated for her performance as Glinda.

After Emilia Pérez enjoyed a successful night at the Golden Globes, it’s no surprise that the musical is shortlisted in three SAG categories. Perhaps most notably, Karla Sofía Gascón is up for Female Actor in a Leading Role, making her the first out trans person nominated for a solo award at the annual ceremony.

Elsewhere, Ireland’s own Andrew Scott has been recognised for his role in Ripley. He features in the Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series category, and is not the only Irish person to receive a nod; outspoken LGBTQ+ ally Nicola Coughlin is up for Female Actor in a Drama Series for her performance in Bridgerton.

Baby Reindeer’s Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning, who have taken home several awards in recent months, each received nominations in the male and female acting categories for a Television Movie or Limited Series. Similarly, Jodie Foster is once again being recognised for her role in True Detective: Night Country. She is up against Gunning for Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series, a category in which Lily Gladstone also appears for playing a queer character in Under the Bridge.

Gay star Colman Domingo is shortlisted for Male Actor in a Leading Role, alongside Daniel Craig who is nominated for his performance in the film Queer. Jeremy Strong also appears in the category after he played Roy Cohn, a closeted politician and lawyer who died from AIDS-related complications, in The Apprentice.

LGBTQ+ talent and characters also appear in the Female Actor in a Comedy Series nominations, namely Ayo Edebiri for her role in The Bear and Jean Smart for her performance in Hacks.

The winners of the 2025 Screen Actors Guild awards will be revealed at the ceremony on February 23, hosted by Kristen Bell.
