In the interview with Miriam O’Callaghan on RTÉ’s flagship current affairs programme, the Taoiseach said that voting for the referendum on same-sex marriage will take place on May 22, 2015, with the result likely to be announced on May 23.

Kenny, who has openly expressed his support for the Yes side, told RTÉ the referendum is about “tolerance, respect and sensitivity”.

He said that he hoped support for the Marriage Equality would hold up and said most members of the Oireachtas are also on the Yes side, adding that it creates an image of a “tolerant and inclusive Ireland”.

The wording of the referendum on same-sex marriage was finalised last month. The wording that has been agreed upon is, “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex”.
