Maynooth Students Receive 'No Vote' Postcard

Today Maynooth University received a postcard from a No Vote campaign, which equates Yes voters with pedophiles.

A group calling itself No Way is Ireland Gay sent the postcard to Maynooth University’s Student Union earlier today, calling for a no vote in the upcoming Marriage Equality referendum.

Maynooth’s Student Union posted the pictures to their Facebook page today, saying:
“While the Students’ Union do not have any issues with people who may wish to run either a Yes or a No campaign in the upcoming referendum, these sly and heinous remarks incite hatred.”

The postcard arrived at the SU just hours before the students would vote on whether or not a rainbow flag should fly on campus in support of LGBT equality.

Hairy Baby Company Clothing Co’s stamp appears on the postcard and, in response, they made a statement: “The logo stamp is part of a marketing campaign with An Post and currently appears on all stamped mail. It is unfortunate for us that it had to appear on his particular one but we hope that everyone knows us fairly well at this stage and knows that this rubbish wouldn’t come from us”.

Speaking on Today FM, MSU President Ben Finnegan said the postcard was “sick” and “misleading”.
He said no other student unions received a postcard, just Maynooth. “Everyone is outraged and I implore no one to take it serious. If anything, it has inspired me to campaign for a proper information campaign,” he said.

He told Newstalk, “[Maynooth] has always been quite neutral in its stance toward marriage equality, given its proximity to St Patrick’s College, and we respect the views of all our members,” he added.
