Meet The Jezebel Jocks: Stars of a new drag king cabaret

With their first show in Galway already sold out, The Jezebel Jocks are on the rise in Ireland.

Inspiration is often sparked by a fun night out, which is exactly how The Jezebel Jocks were formed. Their press officer, Una B Walsh, gave GCN the lowdown of stars on the rise.

Two members of what would become The Jezebel Jocks had just won a best-dressed competition at a Drag Queen show (no mean feat). By chance, we joined the table of a third talented playwright/actor and got chatting to the fabulous Lesley Ann aka Ulick Ni Clitterbug. In those animated wee hours of a July 2021 morning, the beginnings of Galway’s newest Drag King group emerged.

Within days a fourth amazingly talented playwright and actor, Sarah Fahy aka Jaunty Bi Nature joined our troupe. A meeting was planned, character names were explored, and even the eventual naming of our group was celebrated with a bottle of bubbly, (we never finish a meeting without one). Gradually, stage names, some never to be repeated, brought original stage characters and personas to life.

Our premier performance had been initially planned for Christmas 2021 by the multi-talented Breege Fahy aka Victor Victoria. Unfortunately, it was stopped in its tracks due to Covid.

Moving on from this disappointment and into a new year and era where the arts are making a comeback, we are so excited about our upcoming live show. This will be our first of many upcoming shows in the pipeline and it has already sold out.

With the emergence of an exciting and burgeoning drag king scene in Ireland and all over the UK, the timing seems perfect to bring queer drag out of a niche sub-culture and into a new dimension. Come with us on our journey of exploring our sexuality in all its cheeky swagger and dapper drag king-ing glory. Our show in Galway will offer a unique opportunity for an audience of predominantly women to experience other women and non-male performers who have been notably absent. There is no ‘one-fits-all’ blueprint in gender bender art so do expect the unexpected from strapped-down chests to…all the rest.

Each member brings a personal talent so that we can work well as a group, which now totals five. The multi-talented Aisling McDonagh aka Pat McGee has joined us as assistant manager.

Come meet our amazing mix of talented performers, Victor/Victoria, Ulick Ni Clitterbug and Jaunty Bi Nature and more guest performers including the amazing Kenny Todgers. And there’s more – come boogie with us on the dance floor after the show at our discotheque with DJ Cat. If you feel like dressing up there’s a fabulous prize for the best-dressed audience member.
