As we move past Valentine’s and come into spring, more queer Irish artists release their music for us to enjoy. From electric pop to soothing synth, there’s something for everyone on this list!
Eve Belle – ‘Milo’
This mellow pop song discusses the love and loss of relationships. The short film paired with the tune shows a classic prom backdrop, as the previous friends/lovers gaze at each other. Eve Belle steps on stage to sing, and is dumped with pink gunk from above. The lyrical and slow song takes us through the tribulations of someone close to us getting into a new relationship, and the feeling of them slipping away with it.
Dose – ‘Parallellogram’
This indie-style tune boasts a quick drummer and funky base line, while having melodic vocals that bounce off your eardrums. The Dublin-based band gives an experience that makes you feel as if you’re in a tunnel on the way to heaven, or maybe just a really good gig.
Daniel Cohen – ‘In My Dreams’
The funky synth opening paves the way for bouncy vocals and up-beat vibes. The song is about having the woman you fancy in your dreams, and confessing your love for her tonight. This song also dropped on Valentine’s Day, so what better day to discuss the bridge between friends and lovers?
Dani Larkin – ‘David’
With blurry visuals to compliment smooth backing music and gentle vocals, Dani Larkin’s new song is truly captivating. The music video shows road lights, old clips from offices and astronauts all layered on top of each other – oddly comforting, right? The artist said to HOTPRESS that the track “ponders on the theme of childhood memory and the curiosity of a space-age future”. Dani has also just finished a mini tour with Lisa Hannigan across Ireland in early February.
Laura Fitzsimons – ‘Smoking Room’
Inspired by The Cranberries and Cocteau Twins, the 90s’ inspired musician from North Dublin mixes melodical vocals and intoxicating guitar rhythms in her music. ‘Smoking Room’ is simultaneously a lovenote and anti-lovenote to the place she calls home.
Púca – ‘Destroy Death Forever!’
A song about folklore, spirituality, and growing up in Co. Kildare, Púca swallows us up with this gorgeous live version of his song ‘Destroy Death Forever!’. With breath-halting vocals and mellow piano accompanying it, this tune will both break your heart and mend it back up by the end.
Mister Delishus – ‘MASKS’
The dramatic piano as the song opens is a perfect portrayal of what is to come, as intense action-style movie graphics accompany the powerful vocals of Mister Delishus. The lyrics portray depression, sadness, bullying, anger, abandonment, and abuse in this 90s inspired rock ballad.
HANNAHBELLA – ‘Dainty Fae’
The Cork local’s new single has an up-beat jingle and bouncy lyrics, which combined make an addicting indie-pop song for all the Dainty Fae’s out there. “‘Dainty Fae’ tells the story of a fae who, abandoned and consumed by loneliness, finds herself seething in self-pity. It’s a haunting exploration of isolation, yet wrapped in an unexpected, playful sonic package,” said the singer for DORK.
