Donegal footballer Eamon McGee appeared at a photocall for Yes Equality‘s ‘Pledge to Vote’ today, citing the upcoming referendum as a “once in a generation moment”.

The latest Yes Equality ‘Pledge to Vote’ initiative took place today on the football grounds of Letterkenny Institute of Technology.

McGee is lending his hand to encourage people to vote yes in the marriage equality referendum for Yes Equality, ahead of May’s vote. A similar campaign last November added 40,000 citizens to the register.

Tiernan Brady of Yes Equality said: “There is growing anticipation across Irish society about the marriage equality referendum in May. Our voter registration drive in November received a phenomenal response, with tens of thousands of people registering to vote for the first time.”

Speaking at the Yes Equality ‘Pledge to Vote’ launch in Letterkenny, McGee said: “The civil marriage equality referendum will be a chance to make a critical decision about the future of the country, and especially for our gay and lesbian friends, families and loved ones. But this once in a generation decision will only be made by people who show up on polling day. We call on all citizens across Ireland including first-time voters to pledge to vote in May and to have their voices heard.”

“The polls show a clear majority in favour of marriage equality in Ireland but the only poll that really counts is the one that takes place on the 22nd of May. Yes Equality asks all those who care about the outcome of this once in a generation referendum to pledge to vote, and to make their voices heard,” Brady said.

This comes on the back of Enda Kenny‘s impassioned plea for marriage equality at the Fine Gael party national conference in Castlebar, Co Mayo on Saturday night.
