The Irish LGBT community continues to show support by creating a fundraiser for Orlando shooting victims and loved ones of the Orlando mass shooting

All across the world the LGBT community and general population have been coming together with vigils and tributes to show solidarity for those victims of the Orlando mass shooting, their family, and friends. The George has created a fundraiser for Orlando to support those affected by the shooting.

“To all our customer and friends,” the bar begins.

“We were devastated to hear of the shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

“This event strikes close to home as a sister gay bar, we know that LGBT bars around the world provide a safe space for the members of our community and we will not let this senseless act of violence take that away from us and the community.

“We will respond with love and support and show the world that hate and violence is never the answer.”

Currently The George’s fundraiser has raised €638 in donations, and all funds received will be forwarded directly to Equality Florida which can provide services like counselling, legal services, assistance with travel expenses and other supports for the victims of the atrocity and their families.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has written to President Barack Obama to express sympathy for those affected by the attack: “On behalf of the people and Government of Ireland, I offer our sincere condolences on the shocking loss of life in Orlando.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of the United States, the community in Orlando and the LGBT community, and above all with the families and loved ones of those so senselessly killed and injured.”

“Ireland stands with the United States in this time of immeasurable grief.”

A fundraiser created by Equality Florida in conjunction with Pulse nightclub, the venue where the mass shooting took place has raised over $4m (€3.6m) since it was established two days ago.

The George’s fundraiser for Orlando is one of several ways that the Irish LGBT community can show their support for the victims, friends and families of the mass shooting in Florida.

Following the vigil in Dublin on Monday, further vigils will be held in Cork, Mullingar, and Mayo this week.
