Referendum: Tallies Indicate A Strong YES

As ballot boxes are counted around the country, Ireland is on course to make history by becoming the first country to introduce same-sex marriage as a result of a popular vote.

In polling stations around the country yesterday, Irish citizens turned out in huge numbers to vote in the historic marriage referendum. As votes continue to be counted, early indicators show a strong Yes majority.

“Ireland has become a global leader in the fight for equality, and a beacon to countries where LGBT people are denied, oppressed, tortured, imprisoned and murdered,” says Editor of GCN, Brian Finnegan.

“With the full endorsement of the Irish people, we have become a beacon of light and hope for LGBT people in countries on every continent, where they are not equally respected, recognised and protected. I am so proud.”

Leading No campaigners have tweeted their congratulations to the Yes side.

The Iona Institute also released a statement earlier today saying, “We would like to congratulate the Yes side on winning such a handsome victory in the marriage referendum. “They fought a very professional campaign that in truth began long before the official campaign started.”

Prominent Yes campaigners have been tweeting their reactions as the vote count continues.
