Ministers have announced that from December 31, same-sex couples in Scotland will be able to marry.

Couples who are already entered into civil partnerships will be able to upgrade their relationship status on December 16. There will be no charge for couples who upgrade to marriage within the first year.

Members of the Scottish Parliament approved the Marriage and Civil Partnership Act earlier this year, despite opposition from the Catholic Church and Church of Scotland. Ministers have stressed, however, that no religious body would be forced to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies.

Health Secretary Alex Neil said that the legislation is an “important signal that our nation is absolutely committed to the same rights for all our citizens.” Adding that it will be “a proud and no doubt emotional day for many.”
